Parking rates in Iowa City will increase next month

The next time you visit Downtown Iowa City, pay a little more to park! A new article from the Iowa City Press Citizen says parking rates will increase from Monday, July 1.

According to the Iowa City Government website, the Iowa City Council approved an increase in parking rates in the city on May 21. This is actually the first time rates have been increased since 2013. The website states:

“This increase is because maintenance costs for parking facilities have increased significantly over the past eleven years. Current revenue from parking fees only covers 22% of the Parking Division’s budget.”

Although parking permit rates will not change, there will be changes for parking ramps, paid on-street parking and parking passes. Here are some of those changes, courtesy of the Iowa City Government website:

  • The first hour of parking on all driveways is free
  • Parking in the driveway is $2 per hour after the first hour
  • Metered on-street parking in the Central Business District costs $3 per hour (was $1.50)
  • Metered on-street parking in remote areas costs $1.50 per hour (was 0.75 or $1)
  • Expired parking meter rates:
    • 1st offense – warning
    • 2nd offense – $10
    • 3rd offense – $15
    • 4th offense – $20
    • 5th offense – $30
    • 6th+ violation – $40
