Obituary of Charles McKenna – Ellington, CT

McKENNA, Charles Charles McKenna, 89, of Ellington, beloved husband of 65 years to Beulah (Mathieson) McKenna, passed away peacefully on Monday (June 25, 2007) at a local convalescent home. He was born in Tewksbury, MA, grew up in Munson, MA, and lived in Ellington for the past 46 years. After graduating from high school, Charles joined the United States Air Force and served as a flight engineer and ground technician during World War II. After his discharge, Charles worked as a manager in the furniture warehouse of G. Fox & Co. in Hartford. He later took a position at Sage Allen and served as department manager for the men’s and boys’ departments until his retirement. He was a member of the Hatheway-Miller Unit #62, American Legion Post in Ellington and was a former member of Cedar Knob Golf Course in Somers. Charles enjoyed sports and enjoyed watching golf and baseball games on TV, especially the Boston Red Sox. During his retirement he also enjoyed fishing in local lakes and rivers and traveling with his wife. He was a member of the Ellington Congregational Church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Stuart Charles McKenna and his wife Mary of Suffield; a daughter, Sheryl Gifford and her partner Roland Lord of Springfield, MA; three grandchildren, Steven Gifford and his wife Kim, Janice Burmeister and her husband John “Augie,” and Jessica McKenna; and two great-grandchildren, Sean and Ryan. Funeral services will be private.
