Florida State rides nine-run innings to clinch a spot in the super regionals

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Max Williams hit a three-run home run to cap a nine-run fifth inning and No. 8 nationally ranked Florida State defeated Central Florida 12-3 Sunday night to claim the championship at Tallahassee Regional of the NCAA Tournament.

The Seminoles (45-15) advance to the super regionals, which begin Friday.

Jack Zyska, who kicked off UCF’s win over Stetson earlier in the day, went deep to give the Knights (37-22) a 2-0 lead in the first inning. That score held until the fifth, when FSU scored nine runs on five hits.

Cam Smith hit a two-run home run with one out to get the big inning rolling. Three batters later, Jaime Ferrer hit a two-run double down the leftfield line. Jaxson West delivered a two-out, two run single and Williams followed with his three-run explosion.

The Knights scored some runs in the sixth and seventh inning, then Florida State capped it off with a three-run seventh, the lone hit coming on Marco Dinges’ single to the shortstop. ___
