Bethesda Big Train overpowers Gaithersburg Giants on opening day

The Bethesda Big Train started the Cal Ripken Sr. League 2024 on a high note, defeating the Gaithersburg Giants 12-3 on opening day at Shirley Povich Field.

Matthew Westley (Maryland) hit a three-run homer in the first inning and starter Evan Smith (Virginia Tech) struck out six in four innings to lead the way. cLoser Max Martzolf (Florida Atlantic) closed out the win with four strikeouts over two innings of work.

“We just played baseball. We just said, do what you do, stay true to yourself, play the game, let the game come to you,” said Big Train head coach Sal Colangelo.

The Big Train plays the Cropdusters on Monday at 7 p.m bee Shirley Povich field.
